Libera is a network of associations, social cooperatives, movements, groups, schools, trade unions, dioceses, parishes, and scout groups all united in the commitment not only “against” mafias, corruption, criminal networks, and those who sustain them, but a deep commitment “for” social justice, the pursuit of truth, the protection of rights, transparent politics, a democratic rule of law founded on equality, a living and shared memory, and a citizenship that reflects the spirit and hopes of the Italian Constitution.
Founded in 1995, Libera has adhered strictly to a number of ethical and practical principles over the years. The first is continuity. Good ideas alone are not enough; they must be carried forward through perseverance and daily commitment. The second is constructive action. The fight against mafias and corruption cannot rely solely on indignation, acting on proposals and projects is crucial. The third principle is collective responsibility, or the idea of “we”. Organised crime and corruption are not merely criminal problems; they are also social and cultural challenges which must be addressed through collective action and multidisciplinary collaboration across different sectors of society.
Libera’s Presence Throughout Italy and the Globe
Libera is active in Italy through 20 regional and 75 provincial coordinations, and 304 local groups. In addition, 80 international organisations from 35 countries across Europe, Africa, and Latin America are part of the Libera international network
Every summer, more than 4,000 youth take part in educational and volunteering camps on confiscated assets, and around 1,000 are involved in environmental protection projects. More than 5,000 schools and university faculty work alongside Libera to design and implement educational programmes focused on responsibility, active citizenship, and democratic legality. These programmes engage thousands of students and hundreds of teachers and academics every year.
Memory and Commitment: The Foundational Pillars of Libera
Libera is committed to remembering and honouring the lives of the innocent victims of mafias—men, women, and children who lost their lives to mafia violence while defending freedom and democracy. This shared memory is carried forward through the testimony and commitment of their families, who strive to ensure that the ideals and dreams of their loved ones continue to live on.
Every year, on 21 March, the first day of spring, Libera organises the Day of Memory and Commitment in Remembrance of the Innocent Victims of Mafias. Across Italy and abroad, the names of all innocent victims, both local and international, of mafia violence are publicly read aloud. It is a long list, recited as an endless civic rosary in order to keep their memory alive and ensure they are never forgotten.
From 21 March and throughout the other 364 days of the year, Libera continues its work on the belief that only by turning memory into responsibility and civic engagement can the seeds of new hope be sown.
